Mickey Thompson Test Day With The Gas & Tyre Crew

Behind the Brand: Who is Mickey Thompson – The man behind the brand is nothing short of a legend!

In 1939 at age nine, Mickey Thompson witnessed Josh Cobbs break the land speed record. Mickey vowed that one day he would go on to break that record too! By 1958 Mickey was ready to become the fastest man on earth. But tyre companies were reluctant to build a 400 mph tyre. Even though Goodyear eventually did make one, Mickey and an exceptional tyre engineer, Gene McMannis, started their own tyre company that became an industry leader in racing and off-road tyres. In 1960 Mickey Thompson became the fastest man on earth by travelling at 406.6 mph in his own tyres. He was determined, curious and creative this led to a life full of discoveries and innovations that would change the motorsport world. Mickey reinvented the tyres used in the Indy500 in 1963. He innovated the current Indy500 tyre by widening it, using a soft rubber compound and a low profile this led to greatly enhanced stability and a new level of high performance.

Off the Road

Mickey switched to off-road when the sport was in its infancy he tweaked machines to get more performance when off-road racing. The man that become known as the Horsepower king brought the thrill of off-road racing into stadiums and getting celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger to compete. During Mickey’s action-packed life he participated in over 10,000 races, drove over 1 million race miles and won at least one championship in such diverse categories of auto racing as midgets, sprint cars, off-road vehicles, stock cars, drag racing and sports cars. But his a contribution to motorsports goes far beyond his racing and in 1990 he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

The Brand Today: Why you should be driving with Mickey Thompson Tyres

  • They are a speciality 4WD tyre company – The world’s largest and most diverse range of 4X4 sizes from 30″ to 54″ diameters and 8″ to 19.5″ wide.
  • Deeper tread & leaders in tread technology – Having 12.5% deeper tread than most other brands means more grip, more kilometres and more resistance to damage.
  • Stronger sidewalls + sidewall protection – 20% more rubber in the upper sidewall reduces the chance of sidewall damage. Thicker sidewalls means Mickey Thompson tyres have a higher load capacity than many other brands
  • Ultimate Angle for Cutting and Self Cleaning + Deep Sidebiters – 23° is the ultimate angle for cutting and self-cleaning. (Used on plough blades, tractor tyres and razor blades). This means you get maximum traction with only the same level of road noise as less aggressive tyres. A unique step design for climbing out of ruts. Positioned to protect the sidewall from off road damage
