Handling and Storing Your LPG Gas Bottles the Right Way

LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) is a reliable and convenient choice for household energy solutions - from cooking delicious meals to keeping your home warm on chilly nights, LPG cylinders play a crucial role in many homes across Northland.

Gas & Tyre can provide you with the gas, but it’s up to you to handle and store your LPG bottles correctly and with the utmost care. Your safety is always our priority, so we’re here to provide you with essential tips on how to safely handle and store your LPG gas bottles.

1. Choosing a Secure Location:

Make sure you store your LPG bottles in a well-ventilated and open area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. You’ll also need to keep your gas cylinders away from flammable materials or possible ignition sources. You might be able to find a good spot in your backyard or garage, but if you’re unsure if you’ve picked a good spot feel free to reach out to your local Northland Gas and Tyre team, or read more here:

2. Storing Your Bottles Properly:

Always store your cylinders upright on a stable, flat surface. Securing it with a sturdy strap or chain to prevent it falling is a great idea too. Correct storage is important because incorrectly storing your LPG bottles could cause leaks, ignition hazards, environmental damage, and also legal and insurance issues.

3. Ventilation Matters:

Good ventilation in your storage area is crucial to prevent gas building up if there’s a leak - proper ventilation helps dissipate any escaping gas, which minimises the risk of ignition.

4. No Smoking!

Absoutely no smoking near your gas bottle storage area! This is because cigarettes and open flames can ignite leaking gas, which could result in disaster. Make sure everyone in your household is aware of this safety rule, and take it into account when considering where to store your LPG bottles.

5. Regularly Check Your Bottles for Leaks:

Get your bottles regularly inspected at your local Gas & Tyre, and check for leaks or signs of damage frequently. You can check for leaks by using soapy water on the bottle - apply soapy water to the cylinder, valve and connections of your bottle, and if you see bubbles forming then there might be a leak.

6. Transport Carefully

When transporting your LPG cylinders, make sure they’re secured and upright, and stored in a well-ventilated place in your vehicle. Be extra careful to avoid any sudden stops or sharp turn too.

7. Professional Installation is Key:

Whether you’re connecting a new cylinder or replacing your old one, it’s best to rely on the professionals. Gas and Tyre’s expert technicians are always here to assist you with proper installation and safe connection procedures.

8. Keep Children Away

Kids are curious, and it’s crucial to keep them away from LPG cylinders and the storage area. Gas bottles aren’t for playing, so educate them about the potential dangers and the importance of safety.

9. Prepare for Emergencies

Keep a fire extinguisher and first aid kit handy in case of any emergency situation. It’s also important to familiarise yourself with the emergency shut-off procedures for both the cylinder and main gas supply.

10. Regular Maintenance
