4wd Tyres

I have finally found it - the absolute perfect all terrain 4WD tyre regardless of what anyone says! The latest legendary All Terrain tyre from Mickey Thompson in the USA - the Baja Boss® A/T.

OK, looking at it I would hardly have called it an All Terrain tyre as it looks more like something the US Navy Seals would spec on their Humvees. But this tyre is amazing, and I mean like seriously amazing. Why...?

Here's why:

I fitted these tyres (size LT275/55R20) on the day before Christmas 2021 to my completely standard 'off-the-showroom-floor' Ford Everest Sport with the 2.0L bi-turbo diesel engine. I had just done 43,000 kms on a set of LT285/50R20 Mickey Thompson Deegan 38 AT tyres, and they were a little more than half gone. (This isn't the amazing bit). Since that day before Christmas, I have racked up almost 3000 kms covering every type of road / off-road surface I could find in my travels. When on the bitumen, dry or wet, they were responsive, quiet (very), braked well, and cornered incredibly well. When on rough gravel roads, they didn't flick stones up, didn't bounce much across the rutted sections, and all the time felt fully in control. When in the sand, including exceptionally soft sand, they just kept pulling the Everest through, and I never engaged the 'Sand Mode' on the Terrain Response system in the Everest, neither did I drop the pressures from the 30psi we inflated them to. And when in some steep rocky terrain near the edge of a Manawatu river, they hooked up and clawed me to the top with out missing a beat, although the Everest's diff lock did automatically kick in.

Yes I know the tyres were brand new. Yes I know this just sounds like what every other premium All Terrain would do. Yes I know that there's a chance I'm bias towards Mickey Thompson. ;-) Yes I know I don't know how many kms they'll do until they're worn out. Yes I know that they're one of the most expensive tyres on the market in NZ. But these tyres have me hooked more than ever before!

My only negative is that the LT275/55R20 size has sapped a bit of acceleration power from the Everest's 2.0L bi-turbo. But that's not the tyres fault. And that they carry an up-there price tag. And that's not the tyres fault either!

And I'll emphasis two points; the Baja Boss® A/T is incredibly quiet on the road, and with the PowerPly XD sidewall they will be an incredibly responsive towing tyre.

Quite simply you need to try them to experience it. Reach out to your nearest Gas & Tyre branch and ask them about the all-new Mickey Thompson Baja Boss® A/T.

If you purchase a set you'll be part of the Legend!
